Welcome to Accelerating Literacy Learning I – Word Recognition

This comprehensive 23-hour asynchronous course serves as the second installment in the ALL Ohio Literacy Learning Program, designed to advance teachers’ expertise in developing students’ word recognition skills through the evidence-based Structured Literacy approach. Organized into six self-paced modules with supplementary readings and assignments, the course is grounded in Ehri’s Phases of Word Reading Development and Seidenberg and McClelland’s Four-Part Processor Model, providing educators with research-based frameworks for understanding reading development. Participants will systematically explore phonological and phonemic awareness, foundational and advanced phonics, irregular word reading, and multisyllabic decoding strategies while learning that reading acquisition requires explicit, systematic instruction rather than natural development. By course completion, educators will possess both the theoretical foundation and practical tools necessary to implement evidence-based practices that build proficient word recognition skills in all learners.
