Welcome to Foundations of Literacy
The Foundations of Literacy course is an asynchronous course comprising six self-paced, asynchronous modules with additional readings and assignments. The course is focused on how students learn to read, diverse reading profiles (including dyslexia), a brief overview of essential elements of instruction, essential principles of instruction, tiered systems of support (e.g., Integrated MTSS), and literacy acquisition for multilingual learners. The three main conceptual models focused on in this course are Gough and Tumner’s (1986) Simple View of Reading, Scarborough’s (2001) Reading Rope, and Seidenberg and McClelland’s (1989) Four Part Processing Model for Word Recognition as representations of the reading process. Participants will develop a thorough understanding of current reading science, the reading brain, and best instructional principles for teaching language and literacy skills.
